ONE

First there were the balloons:

And of course, there were the brothers…

(one of whom is trying mightily to go it on his own two feets)…

There was the cake and the candle with a little help in the wind blowing department from Jack…

and the eager consumption of said cake…

There were the guests, our friends and their two lovely children…

There was the rare family photo op…

And the presents! Oh boy were there ever presents!

There was the lovely and much loved Aunt Jo…

There was a walk on the river as the sun began to set…

...a free concert in the park, a co-scrapper little friend, dancing in the grass and ice cream cones…

...and of course, there was resting in the grass, and a whole day filled with love for Arlo…

Happy Birthday my sweetest boy. Every day for the past 365 days, I have thanked the universe that you are mine. Somedays I can barely keep from squeezing you flat with all the joy you are to us...instead, I bury my head into your neck, inhale deeply, and whisper, thank you.

creature comforts

Jack is four now. I’m lately into the practice of watching him when he doesn’t know I’m looking. His little lips twisted in concentration over some epic battle amongst action figures; he hums way off tune, creating the soundtrack for whatever his “guys” are doing. He’s into rather heavy play these days: everything is either a “good guy” or a “bad guy” and someone is always about to go to battle and get knocked to smithereens. The big questions are starting to come from him: what does “dead” mean? What is “evil”? Why is this or that person a “bad guy”? There was a time not all that long ago when he would imagine a rich and diverse life for his play things, but these days, rather than making train tracks or parking garages out of his wooden blocks, he much prefers to turn them all into heavy artillery. Jack has currently a very one-track mind about what constitutes rightful subjects for play and “shooters” abound.

But at night...(sigh)…he still asks for his Bear Bear, and for Cuddly, too. He whispers to them privately as we turn out his light, and he stills holds them close all night long and drags them by the arms into our room in the morning, all fly-away hair and heavy with sleep. I find myself loving these bears so very much for reasons I can’t quite articulate yet, but which are all wrapped up in the complicated and wonderful growing up of this boy who I am so insane about, gun-toting and all.

Nicki and Brandon

My dear friends, Nicki and Brandon, were married in Denver in early June. Nicki is hands-down the most creative and talented little lady I know. She and Brandon had taken it upon themselves to create every aspect of their celebration, from invitations to place settings to hair pins to vows. The whole thing was filled with the love they put into the details, and it was truly the most stunning and touching wedding I’ve ever attended. I was privileged to photograph the sweet couple, who are two of my dearest and oldest friends. I took so many photos and, in truth, I’ve been overwhelmed at the processing of them...a little paralyzed maybe? I feel this pressure to have them measure up to the day itself. I want the photos to speak to the care and attention they gave their wedding, and the ultimate care and attention they give to each other, not because they would ever expect or assume as much, but precisely because they *wouldn’t*.  So I’m plodding through, slowly, and when the image feels finished, I feel happy. Nicki hasn’t asked me once about the whereabouts of the photos, but she must be dying to see...So my sweet friend, a sneak peak and a promise that the rest are on their way soon. xo, S
